{Celebrate!} Tea Concentrate and It's Many Uses

Hey there!

One of the staples in the Queen's Pantry kitchen is tea concentrate. We use it all the time - from hosting large parties or running events to making ice cream. Knowing how to make tea concentrate is a very useful skill. We couldn't do without it!

Beyond tea concentrate being the easiest way to make large batches of hot or iced tea at a time (think 20 or more people), it can also be used to flavor all sorts of treats. Frosting, ice cream, punches and sodas, and baked goods can all be flavored with your favorite tea. Earl Grey is always a popular option for flavoring something, and we've used some of our herbal infusions for different reasons. A quick internet search will find all sorts of recipes using tea concentrate. 

So! Enough talk! How do we make a concentrate!? Here it is! 

Tea Concentrate

[Ingredients & Supplies]

Tea of choice, we used a plain black tea for this

Hot water - 2 cups

Liquid measuring cup

[Instructions & Advice]

Bring the water to a boil. 

While the water is coming to a boil, measure out 4 teaspoons of tea into an infuser or tea bags. (Remember the rule of thumb is 1 teaspoon of loose tea per cup of water.)  

Place the infuser into the liquid measuring cup.

When the water reaches a boil, pour 2 cups of water into the liquid measuring cup. 

Let steep for 3-5 minutes.

What you now have is a double strength pitcher of tea. If you want to enjoy iced tea, now is the time to fill up your glass with ice! Slowly pour the concentrate over ice, allowing the ice to melt as you go. 

If you want to serve the tea hot but need to save some time, cover the concentrate and place in the fridge. When you are ready to serve the tea boil at least two cups of water. Pour the concentrate into a tea pot and measure two more cups into the tea pot. You now have tea at the proper strength! 

The conversation rate is pretty simple. 

Use enough tea leaves for the Total amount of tea desired and Half the amount of water.

If you want: 

4 cups of tea = 4 teaspoons of tea, 2 cups of water

6 cups of tea = 6 teaspoons of tea, 3 cups of water

8 cups of tea = 8 teaspoons of tea, 4 cups of water
